While we focus on what happens in the bedroom, the quality of our sleep is largely determined by what we do during the daylight hours. Our bodies operate on a circadian rhythm—a 24-hour internal clock that is heavily influenced by light, activity, and nutrition. To ensure a deep rest at night, you must “anchor” your rhythm during the day. The most effective way to do this is to seek out natural sunlight as early as possible after waking up.

Daytime sunlight exposure helps regulate the timing of melatonin release later in the evening. Similarly, being mindful of stimulant intake is essential; caffeine has a half-life that can last up to six hours, meaning that afternoon cup of coffee might still be circulating in your system when you are trying to sleep. Physical activity also plays a role—regular movement during the day increases the “sleep drive,” or the biological need for rest, making it easier to fall asleep quickly. By aligning your daily choices with your body’s natural requirements, you turn sleep into a predictable and refreshing conclusion to your day.
